The S-TEC™ technology can be embeded in custom designed plug-in-cards to bring the performance of any satellite modem close to channel capacity. It can be used very efficiently with higher order modulations for user data rates up to 20 Mbps. It allows secure point-to-point satellite links at no extra cost in terms of power or bandwidth.

The S-TEC™ codec is currently integrated into the PSM500 and Solante Turbo Connect satellite modems.

Applications
The S-TEC™ codec is designed for power and/or bandwidth limited satellite communications which require superior performance. For applications like GSM back haul services or multimedia, e.g., VoIP combined with IPTV or data, the S-TEC codec offers the optimum solution for each type of IP packet in order to meet their required QoS (delay, BER).

The S-TEC™ codec can switch on the fly between ATM (53 bytes), MPEG2 (188 bytes) or any other custom size packet size in order to provide minimum end-to-end delay. Delay sensitive packets are encoded faster, with a powerful code, and have top priority, while the other packets are encoded using larger interleavers (to achieve maximum coding gains) and higher coding rates (to save satellite bandwidth). The decoder automatically identifies the type of encoding used and outputs the top priority data first. Each type of traffic is thus encoded in an optimum way for both delay and target bit error rate.

Benefits
The benefits of S-TEC™ to high volume point-to-point satellite communications are:
